Subtitle Line Breaker

Imported an SRT into Premiere Pro or CapCut and got one full line with a stray word or two underneath? Split long subtitle lines into two balanced lines — right in your browser.

100% in your browser — your files never leave your device.

How to split long subtitle lines

  1. Step 1

    Add your subtitles

Paste your SRT or VTT, or upload the file — it stays in your browser.

  2. Step 2

    Set the line length

Leave the maximum characters per line on Auto, or enter your own (e.g. 42). Keep re-balancing on to fix existing two-line cues too.

  3. Step 3

    Break & download

Click Break lines, check the summary, then copy or download the file and import it again.

When to use this

  • Your editor wraps a long one-line subtitle as a full line plus one or two words on a second line — a hard two-line break fixes the layout everywhere.
  • A delivery spec asks for a maximum subtitle line length, such as 42 characters per line and at most two lines.
  • Auto-generated or translated subtitles came out as single long lines and need proper two-line subtitles.

FAQ

How many characters per line should subtitles have?

Common guidelines, such as Netflix-style timed-text guides, allow about 42 characters per line for Latin scripts, about 16 for Chinese and Korean and about 13 for Japanese, with at most two lines. On Auto, the tool reads the line length your file's existing two-line cues use; otherwise it applies these defaults.

Why does Premiere show one long line and one word below it?

The cue is a single line that is a little wider than the caption box, so the editor wraps only the last word or two. Splitting it into two lines of similar width in the file itself gives a clean, balanced two-line subtitle in Premiere Pro, CapCut, DaVinci Resolve and players.

Does it change the timing?

No. Only the text of long cues gets a line break; cue numbers, timecodes and VTT settings are copied exactly.

What happens to dialogue lines?

Cues with a speaker dash on a line ("- Where to?" / "- Home.") are left as they are, and so are cues that already have three or more lines. A cue is never split into three lines.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Line breaking runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
